This self-initiated publication and exhibition of visual research, by Glen Cummings and Adam Michaels, describes the history and use of the X symbol within (and without) underground music culture.

x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x tells its story visually with photos, documents, publications and clippings culled primarily from online sources and includes material related to the X’s letterform in punk, pornography, and corporate brand names, among other subjects. An exhibition and publication launch at W/ — gallery on New York’s Lower East Side featured wallpaper, custom furniture (Adam Michaels with Jordan Carver), interactive projections (Stewart Smith and contributors), handstamps, and Dos Equis beer. The research and exhibition processes brought together more than a dozen participants and contributors who shared image collections and references, built or installed parts of the exhibition, or programmed events, thereby collaboratively extending the project’s conversation and audience.
